Title: Reorganize AIPS++ mailing lists Person responsible: Joe McMullin(jmcmulli@nrao.edu) Originator of proposal: Wes Young (wyoung@nrao.edu) Exploders targeted: aips2-developers Time table: Date of issue: 2003 Oct 24 Done Comments due: 2003 Oct 30 Done Revised proposal: 2003 Nov 3 Done Final comments due: 2003 Nov 7 Done Decision date: 2003 Nov 10 Done Statement of goals: ------------------- Reduce the number of AIPS++ mailling lists, switch to using mailman archiving. Background: ----------- Currently we have the following mailling lists: List Name Last Active *aips2 02/09/13 aips2-alma aips2-aoc 03/10/21 aips2-astro-design 00/08/15 aips2-atnf 02/01/08 *aips2-beta 99/01/29 *aips2-bugs 03/10/20 aips2-c++ 94/01/03 *aips2-changes 03/10/21 aips2-cop 03/04/20 *aips2-cv 02/07/26 *aips2-dish 02/12/28 *aips2-doc 01/08/17 *aips2-gbt 03/05/19 *aips2-glish 03/04/01 aips2-graphics 91/12/09 aips2-help 03/08/13 aips2-image 91/09/05 *aips2-inhale 03/10/22 aips2-interface 91/12/17 *aips2-lib 03/10/13 *aips2-modulebosses 03/10/17 *aips2-multibeam 03/04/15 aips2-naug 03/10/21 *aips2-nfra 96/05/18 *aips2-nrao 02/12/17 *aips2-parallel 01/09/14 aips2-patches 02/08/07 *aips2-pipelines 01/02/06 *aips2-plugins 00/03/16 aips2-procmailtest - aips2-recipes - aips2-register - *aips2-reports 03/10/20 aips2-request - aips2-sc 95/04/04 aips2-single-dish 93/12/06 *aips2-sitemgr 03/08/26 aips2-structures 92/01/28 *aips2-synthesis 03/02/26 *aips2-system 03/02/24 aips2-test - *aips2-testing 03/10/21 aips2-tools 91/12/02 *aips2-ui 02/04/06 aips2-user - *aips2-visualization 03/10/09 aips2-vo /03/02/06 aips2-weekly-reports 03/10/20 *aips2-workers 03/10/08 * indicates on E-Mail reflectors page, date /yy/mm/dd indicates last useful post. Many of these lists are essentially inactive. We maintain our own archiving scheme for messages (not using the mailman archival feature). Summary: -------- 1. Move to using "Mailman's" archiving. Keep the old messages but orphan the pages so access to the list is not a link from any of the web pages in the AIPS++ web tree. 2. Have only the following active lists. aips2 General announcements; should be broadest group. I believe this should ultimately be the user mail list, though the listmgr reports should not go here. aips2-inhale Logs of builds. This includes inhales, assays and benchmarks. Few should be subscribed to this but the results can be viewed through an archive. We'll also want something to summarize these results and mail to a broader list. aips2-sneeze Sneeze logs aips2-glish Discussions related to Glish; particularly important for planned migration away from Glish. aips2-developers This will combine the use of: aips2-lib aips2-workers aips2-visualization and Wim's suggested methods/tools/soft engineering. We don't want to overwhelm people with e-mail but these issues should be generally universal and should concern everyone. I also believe that the ME/MS discussions belong here. aips2-sitemgr Announcements/dicussions for managers of installations. Also OS related issues and software engineering. This will combine the use of: aips2-sitemgr aips2-system aips2-reports As Wes mentioned, there is no digest mode so aips2-weekly-reports reports from developers go to aips2-reports and are combined and sent out as aips2-weekly-reports. Not ideal but adequate. NRAO-only maintained lists: These concern local issues. Other sites can setup similar lists as needed. aips2-naug NRAO user group - needed now for current activities but will merge into aips2 at some point. aips2-aoc AOC site aips2-test This is a diagnostic list for internal testing purposes These and the other local site lists will be converted to locally maintained lists off of the aips2 lists. 3. Rather than email the entire sneeze log to aips2-inhale, have sneeze only email up to 50 errors lines to aips2-inhale. ---+++ Expected Impact Reduces the overhead of mailling list management. The mailman archiving has options that encode the email addresses so we might get on fewer spam lists. Reduce the size of the mailed sneeze logs. ---+++ Documentation Changes The AIPS++ E-mail reflectors page must be changed to reflect this.
