How many log messages are in the file

Synopsis
nmessages()

Description
This function (no arguments) returns the number of messages stored in the log file. If you are using the GUI you probably don't need to know this, however if you are calling any of purge(), printtofile(), or getformatted() by hand for some reason you might want to call this function
